CHOICE
(Children Have Options, Imagination, Challenge, & Experience)
CHOICE Graduation Rookeries and Carleton.
In an innovation for this year, students from all four key stages worked together, with the aim of the oldest mentoring the youngest. The course proved to be a massive challenge and the six students who graduated were really stretched.
Parents of those who succeeded, attended the passing out parade and were very proud and appreciative of the support that has been offered to their children. Everyone enjoyed a thoroughly pleasant afternoon.
CHOICE 2013
Carleton Community High School have launched the second year of the CHOICE programme created and coordinated by Annette Gillian, Carleton’s Student Welfare Manager.
The Actions and Consequences programme has a focus on raising attainment and attendance by offering students a College vision of what can be achieved once focused alongside a 30 week intensive right from wrong choice timetable.
Last year 34 students from The Rookeries Primary school, Cobblers Lane Primary and De-Lacy Primary school successfully graduated achieving an AQA accreditation certificate and were inspired with regards to career aspirations in the Public Services sector
The 2012/13 programme has been further developed allowing four key stages to participate. Students from The Rookeries Primary school, Carleton Community High and Wakefield College have joined together, so that the older students guide and mentor the younger ones.
The first six weeks allow students to experience what it is like to be a Fire Fighter. West Yorkshire Fire Service support and guide students in all aspects of fire safety and career options. Normanton Fire station is host this year led by Martin Hoole and Ian Stead.
The timetable will include a Police young explorer course, Railway safety, Health education and an opportunity to experience what College life is like.
Students are enthusiastic and keen to engage with the programme. Students this year have nominated themselves in order to access the opportunities which are made available.
We are delighted that we are able to continue with the programme again this year as it is an exciting opportunity for all concerned. More importantly it is supported by dedicated specialist staff from all areas.
CHOICE 2011
On Thursday July 5th the first graduation ceremony was held for the young people that had been involved in the CHOICE initiative. Our head teacher and Keiber Berry, Vice Chair of Governors, presented certificates to the learners from Rookeries, Cobbler's Lane and De Lacey Primary Schools in front of an appreciative audience of parents and friends.
Representatives from West Yorkshire Police, West Yorkshire Fire Service and Wakefield College joined with the primary headteachers in congratulating the graduates and also recognising the hard work done my Annette Gillian who initiated and led the project.
Entertainment was provided by our Year 7 choir and a group of our dancers supported by a demonstration of Drill by Wakefield College Public Service Students.

We are delighted that the CHOICE programme, being run for our feeder schools by Mrs Gillian, has received national recognition. After three groups graduated from the Fire Service Course, groups of learners are now working with the West Yorkshire Police. The details of the national interest can be found here. |
Rookeries School' Fire Fighters Passing Out ParadeThe third and last Passing Out Parade involved the learners from Rookeries School Carleton. More schools will be involved later in the year, but certainly this group showed their metal as they demonstrated their skills for a large supportive group of parents. |
Cobbler's Lane School' Fire Fighters Passing Out ParadeThis week it was Cobbler's Lane School learners who showed their fire fighting skills during their passing out parade at Castleford Fire Station, watched by their proud parents (slide 11) |
De Lacy School' Fire Fighters Passing Out Parade
As part of the CHOICE programme children from three schools have taken part in a Fire Fighting Course at Castleford Fire Station. Today was the passing out parade for the De Lacy group. Children demonstrated skills and team work for parents and Station Managers before receiving their certificates of achievement. 23 parents in all attended the parade along with Fire Service staff from various areas of West Yorkshire. Mrs Gillian, Carleton High School's Pupil Welfare Manager and CHOICE organiser, said, "I am very proud of what has been achieved through this course which has been delivered by very passionate and committed staff. I would like to give special thanks to Ian Stead and Martin Hoole for making the whole experience one never to be forgotten." |
CHOICE (Children Have Options, Imagination, Challenge, & Experience) is a new programme developed by our Pupil Welfare Manager, Mrs Gillian. It is aimed at primary aged children and has a main focus on anti-social behaviour. It will consist of a thirty week programme delivered by the statutory services on actions and consequences and at the moment three schools, De-Lacy Primary, Cobblers Lane Primary and the Rookeries will be taking part with a further four schools being involved in the spring of 2012.
With the help of Wakefield College, children enrolled on the course will be able to access taster sessions in various vocational areas including General Construction, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Plumbing and Hair and Beauty. The College will also create a record of achievement for each child and at the end of the thirty week period will hold a mini graduation ceremony. The children involved will be the first ever Wakefield College Cadets.
Included in the programme are a six week Fire Fighting Course and an accredited Boxing course.
The programme was launched on 9th November at Wakefield College’s skillsXchange where the first group will attend and be presented with sweatshirts by the College Director for Learner Development.
