As part of 10c's 'Volunteering in the Community Award' they had to organise a fund raising event to raise money for a Nature Awareness boat trip. The photos show some of the learners steering the boat. It was a fantastic day.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park

On  Wednesday 25 May, members of 11C1 accompanied Mr Harrison, Ms Atack and Mrs Wood on a visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Doncaster, as a reward for their good work over  their two years on the course. A fabulous time was had by all as can be seen below.

Groundwork

The year 10 work related group have been working with Kathy from Groundwork on an exciting project on our school allotment. They are creating a wildflower meadow, natural hedgerow, woodpile and bird boxes, to encourage wildlife to the area.

Congratulatiions to Luke Ward, a member of the Year 11 Work Related course, on being awarded an apprenticeship at Precision Engineering.  This comes at the end of Luke's work placement there two days a week during his final year at school.

Catterick Barracks Visit

A cohort of Year 9 learners, who will be following our Work- Related from September 2010, visited the Army Careers Day at Catterick Barracks on June 15. Accompanied by Ms. Atack and Mr. Harrison, the group involved themselves in a variety of activities, designed for them to consider a future career in the armed forces. The day included a spectacular parachute display and exhibition from the Motorcycle Display team. A fun day was had by all, although probably not all of our young people will be following this vocational route, as one who was encouraged to make her personal ‘dog tag’, kindly turned down the offers , as she ‘didn’t own a dog’.

Chicken Run

The latest non-teaching members of the school community have two legs as expected, but they also have a pair of wings. Money raised with a sponsored walk by members of both Year 10 and Year 11 work related groups, has been used to purchase six chickens to be kept on the school allotment.

  • A very large and beautiful Marans.

  • An equally attractive Rhode Island Red

  • A Warren, a bit common but a good layer

  • A Gold Laced Wyandotte,

  • and finally two lovely little Silkies with a pom-pom on their head

A local resident has kindly donated an aviary which, with the addition of a coop and a ‘run’, has provided a good home for the birds.  The hens are already laying eggs which will fund their keep.

Three of the hens have already been named.  The Marans is called Deano, after Sheffield United's star striker (which may well confuse the young lady hen in later life), and the Silkies are called Jane and Tracey.  Suggestions are needed for the names of the other three.
