Young Business Presenter of the year

Two Year 11 learners recently represented our school in the NVQ Young Business Presenter of the year award which took place on 8 March at the Royal Victoria Hotel in Sheffield. Jessica Press and Jamie Harris designed their own chocolate bar and presented their product in French to a board of experts including MEP for Yorkshire and Humber Linda McAvan, the lead OCR examiner and industry experts. They both did exceptionally well to be selected to go to the final of this event; beating competition from schools across the country and the judging panel were extremely impressed with their professional presentation. To do this in English would be nerve racking enough but to do it in French is a fantastic achievement. Well done! (or should that be très bien fait!)

34 year 8 & 9 learners and 5 staff set off for France at midnight on 21st October. Each member of staff was in charge of a group and this year, after rigorous and careful risk assessments we decided that each learner and teacher would wear a french beret to be easily identified in crowds. Each group had a different colour( bleus, rouges, noirs, creme caramels and creme brulees). We received very positive comments from teachers from other schools travelling on the same ferry and even from the security guards at Le Louvre museum. Upon arrival ,we visited the commonwealth war cemetery outside the village of Wimilli and then we went to the Nausicaa sea life centre in Boulogne sur mer. We arrived to the chateau of La Grande Romaine just before 6 pm. After having dinner and getting familiar with the centre, we had an early night. Next morning we set off to Paris where we had a fantastic day. First we went to La Tour Eiffel, got the lift to second floor where we enjoyed the wonderful views, took lots of pictures, bought some souvenirs and sipped hot chocolate. Then our friendly rep from PGL (Sammie) took us to another souvenir shop just round the corner from the tower where we had the chance to practice our French and do some more shopping (Madame Romero bought a fantastic Eiffel tower lamp!!) After this we did a cruisse along the river Seine and marvelled at the beautiful sights of the city.On our way to Le Louvre our brilliant driver Bob gave us a tour of the city centre; we saw the Arc de Triomphe( did the whole roundabout without any problems!,) les Champs Elysees,Trocadero, Opera Garnier, Musee d'Orsay etc....

At the Louvre we had the chance to see Venus de Milo, the Victory of Samothrace and of course, Mona Lisa.In the evening learners we had a karaoke session and also made some crepes.

The next day we visited the medieval town of Brie Comte Robert where the learners were involved in group work doing a town trail and a shopping task, in order to increase their confidence when speaking French. In the afternoon ,we went to the chateau of Fountainebleau which used to be Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette's hunting lodge; they were the last French Royals, so our learners sampled a bit of french history in majestic surroundings!! That evening we had a Halloween disco, we had lots of fun in our scary costumes, all learners and teachers looked terrific!!!

The following morning we loaded the coach with our lugagge and had a day full of magic and wonder at Disneyland.

As a party leader I would like to praise our learners for their commendable attitude and behaviour, they were a credit to our school and to their families; I would also like to add that the level of care provided by staff( Mr N Smithson, Miss H Everatt, Miss J Ainley and Mr R Srirathan) and their commiment to make the experience enjoyable and rewarding was laudable.

And, finally, I would like to express my gratitude to some members of the finance and administrative teams, whose support and hard work contributed to the success of this visit.

Please pass my thanks to the school's governing body for their continuous support to these educational visits as I firmly believe they are a strength of our school.

merci beaucoup tout le monde!!

European Day of Languages 2011 - A Great Success!

On Monday 26th September Carleton Community High School celebrated the European Day of Languages. The day started with students wearing items of clothing from around the world.

An assembly was held in the sports hall for years 7, 8 and 9. This was an enjoyable and interesting time for everyone. Two guest speakers were well received by all and Rachel Dedicoat, a Year 11 Ambassador, enchanted everyone singing “Can you Feel the Love Tonight” in French.

Croissants, Pain au chocolat and brioche were sold outside the MFL block during break, giving a taste of Europe to learners. Face painting was run by three members of the Year 10 Ambassador team. This activity was widely accepted by many member of the learner community.

During lunch time a Zumba class was run by three professional teachers. Many learner and teachers took part in this fun fitness activity and was enjoyed by all who participated.

The Ambassador Team would like to thank the MFL department for all their help and support in organizing and running the day which was a great success!

…and the Department of Modern Foreign Languages would like to express their gratitude to the Ambassador Team for their commendable attitude, enthusiasm, commitment and excellent entrepreneurial skills.

Routes into languages:

Fifteen of our MFL Learners took part in various linguistic and cultural workshops involving improving communication and team work skills. They worked with Leeds University students and learners from other schools throughout the day, then in the afternoon took part in a competition to design a stand at a Tourist fair to encourage people to visit Paris. Their behaviour and involvement was excellent.  Below is a slideshow of pictures from the day.

Trip to France 2011

There are five places left on the Years 7 & 8 trip to Paris this October (a report on last year's trip can be found below). The cost of the trip is £375 which includes a deposit of £50 and anyone interested should contact Senora Romero as soon as possible.

Trip to France 2010

Forty learners and 5 staff set off for France at midnight on 22nd October. We arrived in Calais an hour earlier than planned, so we immediately immersed ourselves in French culture by visiting Cite Europe. From there we visited Nauticaa Sealife Centre in Boulogne.

On the way in to Boulogne a Commonwealth War cemetery was spotted and so, on the way out, we paid it a visit and had an interesting 20 minutes there. From there we travelled to our accommodation south east of Paris at Chateau Romandie. We were made very welcome and the centre staff provided a range of activities for all those who wished to take part.

Saturday saw a wet visit to the Eiffel Tower, a trip on the Seine and a viewing of the Mona Lisa. Saturday night gave everyone the opportunity to take part in a Fancy dress Halloween disco. Most became very enthusiastic participants with prizes for the best.

Sunday saw a sunny day and a visit to a market in a local town, where pupils were set a number of challenges to find different examples of French culture. The successful team were awarded Disney mugs. This was followed by an afternoon sightseeing trip to Chateau Fontainebleau. You will be pleased to know that when a newly married couple came out of the Chateau they were given a rousing cheer by our pupils. In the evening the party was given the challenge of eating a snail. Some were more enthusiastic than others; the record was 7 eaten by one pupil!

We departed on Monday morning with rooms left in an excellent condition by all. The final day saw a visit to 'Disneyland Paris'. After an exhausting 9 hours we departed for home, arriving back at school at 7am. We were justly proud of the pupils, whose behaviour, manners and standards were all outstanding. They were excellent ambassadors of the school. Ms Everatt, Ms Ainley, Mr Smithson and Mr Turpin worked very hard to ensure that all pupils gained the most from the visit. Signora Romero organised the trip very well. The only mishap was the coach driver falling on Saturday morning and being unable to drive. The PGL staff immediately organised a replacement coach and a new driver was sent out on Sunday night to drive us back.

Below are two photographs of the team:

French trip

26th February - conference in Leeds for year 11 French candidates and year 10 NVQ French. Fun but focused day, with interactive activities which help with vocabulary development and exam skills practice.

'Due to a poor response, the trip to the French conference in Leeds was cancelled; instead we invited year 11 GCSE candidates to watch a theatre play in French at Airedale High school on the 25th of February. This event was free of charge. Students wiere out of school for a couple of hours.'

4th February - conference in Leeds for years 10 & 11 Spanish - the aim of the conference is to inspire candidates and provide them with exam techniques to improve results. The whole day is focused on the demands of the GCSE examination, led by inspirational speakers and largely conducted in Spanish.

'The 33 learners did the school proud and had 5 hours of Spanish doing a wide range of activities using a variety of learning styles although there was a strong focus on the development of listening skills. This experience should enhance their chances of success in the forthcoming exams. The students enjoyed the day although they were a bit disappointed when they could not stop by a famous fast food chain with golden archers...maybe one day if paella is on the menu!!'
