World Book Week

To help celebrate World Book Week, the Maths department joined forces with the library to create a Maths treasure hunt. Groups from year 7 took part in the challenge, to decipher the missing clues and solve the maths riddle. This took them an hour to complete and those successful in the task were rewarded with pirate treasure! Below are some photographs of the activity.

How can I help my child with their maths?

Every child at Carleton Community High School has their own personal username and password for the web site www.mymaths.co.uk.  Although regular homework revision tasks are set on this site for completion outside the classroom all the tasks can be attempted at any time you wish.  The web site includes on line lessons to help revise the topic and support any child that has been absent.

For years 9, 10 and 11, you can also obtain a homework book from school for a deposit of £5 payable to the school bursar. It has lots of revision exercises to practice new material taught in lessons. This book also contains a very useful CD-Rom with an electronic copy of the text book used in school maths lessons.  The £5 deposit is refundable when the book is returned to the bursars in a good condition.

All learners also have access to the school VLE where past exam papers and mark schemes can be downloaded for enjoyment and practice!

You can also purchase to keep a Maths-Watch CD-Rom that contains mathematics video clips. Two discs are available. A level 3 to 5 disc for £3 recommended for years 7 and 8. A key stage 4 disc recommended for current year 9, 10 & 11 for £4 (this item is a DVD). As with the homework book pay your money into the bursar’s office and take the receipt to Mr N Parkinson, Head of Maths.

Calculators can also be purchased from school via the bursar’s office;  £5 for a scientific calculator and £1.50 for a basic calculator (foundation tier only). A personal calculator is required for MOST exams.

Have fun, Maths is a very satisfying and enjoyable subject.

A Level Masterclass

On Thursday September 30th, four Year 10 learners went to Queen Elizabeth Grammar School  to take part in an A level masterclass with pupils from Kings, QEGS and Wakefield Girls High School.  This Thursday, October 7th, we have a similar event for Year 11 learners to be held here at Carleton, but run by Mr Dean Bunnell, the ex-head of maths from QEGS. Mr Bunnell works with the UK Maths Trust and sets some of the challenge questions as well as running various maths competitions across the country.

Mathematical Masters of the Month.

We've started a new reward scheme in maths called Mathematical Masters of the Month.

The learners also have a certificate sent home.

The list for this month is:

On Thursday 8th July, 2010 we took 34 year 9 mathematicians to N.E.W. College to see the Dr Colin Wright, Juggling Talk.

They were entertained and inspired by his description of how he 'invented' the mathematics of juggling during his undergraduate years and used this to discover new juggling tricks and explain those described in writings found from 5000 years ago in Egypt.

He has a Ph.D. from Cambridge and has worked as a research mathematician, and done research in computing. His day job is developing systems to do the maritime version of Air Traffic Control, and in his "free time" he travels around the world giving lectures on what maths can be interesting, fun, useful and even on occasion, exciting.

On Thursday June 10th we had twelve Y8 pupils going to Leeds University for a Maths taster day.

They were be able to look around the University and also to do some maths workshops which this year include maths 'tricks'.

A report of how the visit went, and hopefully some photos, will appear on the site a.s.a.p.

Trip to EdenCamp

On Tuesday 9th March a group of Gifted and Talented KS3 learners went to Eden Camp where they saw a presentation on Cryptography and the Enigma Machine.  They also took part in code breaking exercises before touring the camp.  The day was organised under the auspices of Cambridge University.

Trip to West Yorkshire Playhouse

On Thursday 11th a group of twelve Year 10 and 11 learners went  to the West Yorkshire Playhouse to see a Maths inspirational event.  They were accompanied by learners from The Kings High School, QEGS and Wakefield Girls High School.  More information can be found on the website at
