GCSE History Enrichment Visits
Stop the Clock Day - Thackray Medical Museum
Not strictly a visit because the Museum came to Carleton, not the other way round, but we had Delphi, the Education Manager from the Thackray Medical Museum, in for an 'object handling' session. She brought in medical artefacts from the last 150 years for the students to analyse and evaluate. She also delivered an interesting presentation on the development of medical care in Leeds, the role of the LGI and the history of Leeds Workhouse in which the Thackray museum is now housed (next to St. James'). Below are pictures of the event.

Galleries of Justice
On Wednesday January 19th a group of 45 Year 9 learners visited the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham.
The Galleries of Justice is a crime and punishment museum, based in the old courthouse in the centre of Nottingham. It used to be a debtors prison and 'criminals' used to be hanged on the steps outside. It was especially busy in the 1820's when the Luddites were 'active'. The group went on a crime and punishment tour around the cells, looking at how treatment and attitudes have changed. There was also an artefact handling exercise eg. truncheons, cuffs, prison clothing etc, and a mock trial of Daniel Diggle who was hanged for being a Luddite. This took place in the actual courtroom where Buster Edwards, one of the Great Train Robbers, was put on trial.

The History department will be participating in a GCSE History Examination Conference at the Bradford Playhouse on the afternoon of Wednesday 16th February 2011. The Conference includes an ‘Exam-Busting Workshop’ designed to help pupils improve their performance in the GCSE examination and will be followed by an interactive presentation, ‘The Doctors Show’.
Castle Project
As part of their 'Castle Project' over the Easter Holidays, Year 7 learners investigated what life would be like in a castle and looked at the development of castle design through the ages. To illustrate this many learners built their own model castles and some examples are shown below.
