Health and Social Care

BTEC First Certificate in Health and Social care is offered to learners as an option subject at Key stage 4. This course is designed to help develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners to meet the needs of the health and social care sectors. It will provide opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attributes for successful performance in working life. However, it is an interesting course for anybody considering working with people too.

The learners will study three units over the two year course:

1) Communication and Individual rights within the health and social care sectors

A FamilyLearners will study the importance of good communication skills in order to help them develop effective relationships with people including patients, relatives and colleagues.

2) Individual needs within the health and social care sectorsMan and Nurse

In this unit learners will study the everyday needs of individuals in society; they will investigate the different types of factors which can influence health like smoking, exercise, alcohol abuse, stress, the media etc

3) Human lifespan development

In this unit learners will study how human growth and development changes across the main life stages. Learners will study how Self-concept is developed and how social and economic factors can influence our lives both positively and negatively.

Each unit is assessed through coursework and if learners complete all the units as specified in the course they will either achieve either a pass, merit or distinction grade.
